Parents participating in Opening Doors SessionESC 19 Head Start parents learn about making healthy and nutritious choices that will improve their family’s wellness during an Opening Doors wellness class.

Helga Carrion, a registered dietitian, was invited to give parents a lesson on the best food choices to stay healthy and prevent diabetes.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Hispanic Americans are at higher risk for type 2 diabetes. Diabetes affects Hispanics over their lifetime than any other group.

Carrion gave a "Sugar Shocker" presentation. During her presentation, she demonstrated how much sugar can be found in certain beverages.

Opening Doors is a program for parents to strengthen their leadership, knowledge and support system - all key in preparing their young children for school success.
