Head Start Children learn how to take care of their teeth and eat properly
Texas Kids Dental and its mascot Tina the Tooth visited Cesar Chavez Head Start to teach children and parents about oral hygiene and healthy eating habits.
The special presentation provided children a lesson on how to brush after meals, how to brush and floss properly and to make healthier snack choices like fruits and vegetables.
“We find that there is a misconception among many parents that very young children, especially babies who have no teeth yet, don’t need the same emphasis on brushing and flossing,” said Head Start Family Support Worker, Ana Jimenez. “This is why we invite parents to these events to be educated on the importance of things like brushing the gums on their babies and scheduling regular checkups for their children.”
Texas Kids Dental’s interactive presentation engaged children by asking questions about their dental hygiene habits as Tina the tooth acted out their responses. Texas Kids Dental Marketing Coordinator, Bianca Adame and her team of dental assistants also invited the children to demonstrate proper brushing techniques on a giant model of plastic teeth. After the presentation, all of the children received a free toothbrush and took photos with Tina the Tooth.
“We do presentations like this three to five times a week and the impact is always positive,” said Adame. “Not only for the children but we want parents to understand the importance of teaching oral hygiene at an early age because it leads to healthy habits later. Also, it benefits the parents wallets with fewer trips to the dentist for cavities.”
