PARENT POLICY COUNCIL AWARDS UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS
A college degree is a costly expense that many former Head Start families bear to ensure that their children have opportunities they may not have had. Today, thanks to an undergraduate scholarship funded by Head Start parent efforts, many former area Head Start students are making their way to colleges and universities with a little assistance.
The Head Start Undergraduate Scholarship was established by the Parent Policy Council in 1992-1993 to help Head Start families with college expenses. The Parent Policy Council Scholarship fund is awarded to area graduating seniors who were former Head Start children.
The undergraduate scholarships are awarded to those who demonstrate excellence in academic performance, community service and leadership. Annually, a minimum of two $2,000 scholarships are awarded.
This year’s scholarship recipients were Marco Barbosa a Del Valle High School graduate and Tony Robles a Transmountain Early College High School graduate.
Scholarship applications are accepted in November and can be accessed through the ESC Region 19 Head Start website at esc19hs.net.
